Anyone who reads this blog with any regularity knows that we are die-hard supporters of Israel. They have a rich history, a proud heritage, and let’s face it – the Savior of the world was a Jew. You can’t do any better than that. Throughout the years, they’ve gone through their cycles of stubbornness and renewal, and over 6,000 years have emerged as a people that command respect – not just because of their accomplishments in the scientific and technological communities, but by their very survival. There is no people on the earth more hated than the Jews. Ancient empires enslaved them, and even succeeded – but even 430 years of brutality under the Egyptian empire saw them leave triumphantly behind a pillar of fire as Egypt mourned the death of their first-born sons.
With Israel being such a tiny country, one must wonder how they manage to hang on. Pushed up against the sea, even now they are surrounded on almost all sides by countries whose sole dream is to see every single one of them dead. Liberals must be confounded. Why, if Israel is in such a precarious position, does it not just go away? Why can’t anyone just take it? The answer is two-fold, I believe. First of all is the promise made to them so long ago by God. They are the Lord’s chosen. That’s just how it is. Because of Abraham’s faithfulness, God blessed him and promised to bless the nation that would come from him.
The second reason why Israel continues to exist against all odds is simply because they refuse to be taken.
Israeli Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz said Tuesday that Palestinian prime minister-designate Isma’eel Haneya could be a target for assassination if his radical Islamic Hamas movement resumed suicide bombings in Israel.
‘No-one is immune, also not Isma’eel Haneya,’ Mofaz told Israel Army Radio. The practice of targeted killings is ‘correct and will continue,’ he added.
Look at that. That is unequivocal. It is clear. It is everything that America’s Left refuses to be. It very calmly and concisely lays out the consequences for Hamas’ actions if they continue. There is no waffling, no worries about tolerance and understanding, no feeling of guilt for wanting to remain free (and alive). There is only the peace that comes from clarity of purpose. If you do not stop what you are doing, we will make you stop. There is a bottom line.
Perhaps the most beautiful thing about this is that the world knows Israel will follow through. They don’t make idle threats. They don’t just express the bottom line, they enforce it. To paraphrase Roosevelt, they speak softly and use assassins.
However, equal to Israel’s resolve is Hamas’ stupidity.
‘Israel’s threats won’t scare us and we completely reject its blackmail policy and will never surrender to it,’ Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri told reporters in Gaza City.
This really amazes me. They know, without a shadow of a doubt, that Israel will do what it says it will do. Unlike Hollywood’s Munich, the kidon of Israel’s Mossad are not morally conflicted, wondering if they are doing the right thing. They know that their services are necessary to ensure the safety and future of the Jewish state. Too much blood was spilled in its making; too many people were gassed to forget the price that Israel was purchased for. There are those in Israel who are willing to trade their heritage for a fake version of peace. But there are far more Jews that remember the Holocaust, who read the Torah and listened to the stories of their forefathers. There is no middle ground when survival is at stake.
I’ll be watching this as it unfolds, not just because it does directly affect the U.S. as Israel’s sole ally, but also because I care what happens to the Jewish people. They have earned the right to live in their homeland, and they have given back to the world many times over in the form of technology, scientific achievement, and more. They deserve better than the squatters calling themselves “Palestinians.”
